Wing-foiling paradise
Lots of our guests bring wing-foiling gear with them and take every opportunity to get on the water when winds are a bit lighter or for a lovely sunset session. You can wing-foil in Big Bay (one of the premier spots) right in front of the house.
Wing-foiling spot guide
Big Bay: always super popular with some nice waves most days. The launch spot is just 80 metres from our front gate: pump up in the garden and head down. Just avoid the lifeguarded swim zone in front of Big Bay Surf Club. Wind directions: SE, S, SW, W, WNW.
Kamers to Hakgat: This stretch of the coast is less busy than the main “kite beach” and is accessible from multiple car parks off the R27 road between Big Bay and Melkbosststrand. Wind directions: SE, S, SW, W, WNW.
Rietvlei: Excellent flat water winging on the vlei (lagoon) opposite the Dolphin Beach hotel. Access via the Milnerton Aquatic Club (visit their website for details for short term and long term membership options).
Melkbos and VanStrand (short for Melkbosstrand and Van Riebeck Strand): Nice curving beach favoured on “grey” days when the wind is from the NW as well as the classic sunny SE days. Beware of the kelp. Also has some nice places for lunch nearby including The Hart and Melkboss Kitchen. Wind directions: S, SW, W, WNW, NW.
Sunset Beach: Also popular with windsurfers. Can be a bit gusty and cross off on a SE. Best wind directions: SSE, S, SW, W, WNW, NW.
Witsands: Also known as “Misty Cliffs” offers excellent winging in a NW wind. Launch off the crayfish factory boat ramp and wing down as far as your nerves will allow.
Platboom and Scarborough: Platboom is inside the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve. Take money for the entrance fee and beware baboons (don’t leave food in your car). Lots of wild beauty particularly in early Summer (November) when the proteas are in bloom. Best wind directions: SE, S, SW.
Langebaan: main beach is good - world class even - for wing-foiling (Shark Bay can be too shallow). This sheltered spot is great for learning (see schools below). Best wind direction: SE but also works on SW, W, NW.
